3ds Max has been around for a very long time. Unfortunately, so has some of the base spaghetti code that runs this god forsaken piece of software. If I'd hazard a guess it would be that the engineers at Autodesk has no idea how all the old code works and the ones that once knew have since retired. It's an incredibly unstable, buggy kit that feels dated in every way compared to some of it's competitor. Don't get me wrong. It's very powerful and can do basically anything 3D related, although sometimes with the help of plugins. But it's a nightmare to use and I hate it with a burning passion. Unfortunately if you're working in some 3D related fields you're going to just have to suck it up and use it anyway because the competitors are either lacking things 3ds has or doesn't have enough resources online.

I'm a 3D Graphic/Scenic Designer, and i work on huge auditoriums and interiors all day long so having a program with seamless workflow is a must, and 3DS Max does just that. It has a great selection of build in material libraries, and the ability to customize your workspace makes your work that must faster. This program comes highly recommended from me.

It literally took several months of e-mails back and forth with Autodesk to receive confirmation that my old serial # was eligble for an upgrade. Autodesk continually gave conflicting information, that my serial was eligible, and then it wasn't.

The new modeling tools are very helpful, and there is à good viewport enhancement, we can now display with soft shadows and ambiant occlusion. It seem to be à little slow than the previous version, but anyway, I love it.I haven't tested it too far, but this is a great release for 3DSMAX users.

I have recently graduated college in May and used 3dsmax there. I have been able to find a contrat job now, but I am competing against other people. Almost all of them are from India. I have talked to some of them online and they all have openly admitted to using priated or cracked versions of 3dsmax.

All i have is a educational version from the autodesk student site. I will loose the contract in a few days if i am not able to place in a bid like my competion from India has alredly done. I don't want to use a pirated version like they are using, but i cant afford the $3,695 price tag when i have rent, college loans, car payments, insurance, food and utitiites to pay.

I could not find 3ds Max. I guess i will just have to use another program. I have used Lightwave in school as well, and its 1/3rd of the price of 3dsmax. I will get it instead, unless I just missed the rental page for 3dsmax.

Edit: It looks like there is educational upgrade pricing that Newtek offers for people like me who bought the educational version of the software, which i could not find yesterday. There was upgrade pricing for the old educational version of 3dsmax i have but it is still double the cost of a normal lightwave lisense, without the additonal upgrade savings. Looks like i just found a better option.

If you are reasonably certain they were being truthful about using "cracked" software, report them to AutoDesk and/or related associations/professional organizations/etc. Not as vindictive behavior but as you note its not good for the industry as a whole.

Not all contracts are based solely on cost - offering to provide proof of legitimate licensing, being available for in-person/in-office meetings, and so on can provide those non-monetary incentives to pick you over others.

The cost of licensing and renewals is part of doing business, and your bidding needs to reflect that. Its a steep entry price, which is why many don't go private right out of school but work for others first. That allows you to build a reputation and network to go along with the "war chest" of start-up funding as well as getting a handle on the business aspects you may not be familiar with. Speaking of, there's a number of start-up funding methods available to help, which includes small business and non-traditional loans. Investigate them all, know what you are getting into.

maybe move to MAYA and get their new $800 LT version? the Indians (and the REST of the world, EXCEPT you) will still have that EDGE over you though...they use the full fledge software FO FREEEEEEEE! and LOTS of them..they have ENDLESS resources too!!! that are ALOS FO FREEEEEEE!!!! i.e. evermotion odels, etc etc etc.good frickn luck!hmmm...maybe autodesk will come out with a $800 3ds max LT versions too? so when you hit a wall and need that MUST HAVE feature, then you can UPGRADE for MO MONEY MO MONEY!!!!

Refreshing this thread to note that 3ds Max Indie and Maya Indie are now available in almost all territories worldwide, with additional countries to be added. For more information, please see these links:

Autodesk has announced a new licensing model for two of its flagship design software products; 3D Studio Max and Maya. Each of these programs is used for 3D modeling, Animation, and 3D Rendering and is considered among the best 3D modeling and rendering programs on the market today. The new Autodesk Indie license looks to make these powerful programs more accessible to smaller studios and freelancers. 041b061a72
